Would You Kindly Play This Again?
It’s been 18 years since I felt the adrenaline rush of descending into Rapture, but the memory of that opening scene – the plane crash, the bathysphere, the chilling introduction to Andrew Ryan – remains etched in my memory. BioShock wasn’t just a game; it was an experience, a masterclass in world-building, atmosphere, and storytelling that redefined what a first-person shooter could be. It was a truly unforgettable journey.
A time to remember…
So for you who are not familiar; Bioshock is a first-person, mystery thriller, shooter game. Released in August, 2007 by 2K (Bioshock wiki). What’s so fascinating about this is the plot, the narrative, and of course – the immersion. Bioshock was the very FIRST of its kind at the time, to revolutionize gaming. It introduced “Immersive storytelling” as a first-person shooter. Every choice leads to a different ending, and every decision leads to a different outcome.
Just a side-note: The game developer, Kevin Levine, backstory is truly inspirational. It's a heart-breaking story of countless failures, to finally making it big. His experience of how Bioshock became the revolutionary game of the century, is one truly worthy of the title - legendary.
The game’s backstory begins with a sort-of cinematic background – the year is set roughly around 1960s. Without any spoilers (best you experience it yourself) try watching the trailer. Somehow game stories just hits differently from movies – it sucks you into the world.
Rapture: A City Under the Sea
Okay, this was the “Whoa…” moment for me.
The moment you descend into Rapture, BioShock grips you. The surreal underwater cityscape, 1960s neon lights, submerged skyscrapers like the Chrysler-like buildings, topped with giant deep-sea fishes. Especially the moment where a giant kraken just casually swims between the buildings, wowed me – even till now.

The art deco architecture, the flickering neon signs, the haunting soundtrack – it all comes together to create a city that feels both wondrous and terrifying. The graphical fidelity, even by today’s standards, is impressive, bringing the decaying beauty of Rapture to life in stunning detail.
If you’re a big fan of Jules Verne’s “20,000 leagues Under The Sea”, this would be jaw-dropping amazing.
Bioshock: Immersive Gameplay That Shocks You
BioShock isn’t just about pointing and shooting. It’s about choices. The plasmid system, which allows you to wield supernatural powers, adds a layer of strategy to the combat. Do you choose to electrocute your enemies, set them on fire, or telekinetically hurl objects at them? Then there’s the morality choices, do you save the little sister? Or do you kill her to gain more Adam?
Amid these chaotic decision marking, there’s the story. Oh boy, the story! BioShock’s narrative is a complex and thought-provoking exploration of Objectivism, free will, and the dangers of unchecked ambition. The characters are memorable, the twists are shocking, and the ending (or endings, depending on your choices) will leave you pondering long after the credits roll. And this leads to multiple gameplays just to see ‘what-if’ you made different choices. Nothing short of groundbreaking story-telling, ahead of its time.
” We All Make Choices, But In The End,
– Andrew Ryan, Bioshock
Our Choices Makes Us.”
Why BioShock Still Matters Today
In a world of endless sequels and reboots, BioShock remains a unique and powerful experience. It’s a game that dared to be different, that challenged our expectations, and that ultimately delivered a story that will stay with you forever. It’s a reminder of a time when games were truly ahead of its time.
To be honest, whenever I have an itch for some great narrative, I’ll boot this game up again. Or if I’m lazy to play, I’ll watch the entire game story on YouTube.
Rumor has it that Bioshock has been in talks to have a movie/TV series made. It’s been several years now, but nothing’s concrete. In fact, there’s a fan made series on YouTube that expands upon the rich universe that is BioShock.
